Fuschia or Fuchsia ? Are you spelling it right?

The other day, an Erap joke came across my mind. 


Here's the joke:

Reporter: sir what is your favorite color?
Erap: fuschia
Reporter: excuse me sir, but how do you spell fuschia?
Erap: sige red na lang

(fuschia naman oh!!! oooopss joke lang, hndi naman bad word. :P   )


Erap was witty enough to elude the situation.  Fuschia (or fuchsia) is indeed difficult or shall I say confusing to spell.  So, is it fuschia or fuchsia?  I searched for both and it gave me a lot of results. But as I read the results , it is confirmed that the second spelling is correct.

So , it's Fuchsia. You'll see this word in dictionary.com and Collin's English dictionary online. However, in  thefreedictionary.com, you can find both words. Click here


But wait, Fuchsia is not just a color. Its name originated from a plant which bears the name itself and has that attractive color. 


    The Fuchsia plant

     This plant was discovered somewhere in the Carribean Islands of Hispaniola (now Dominican Republic and Haiti) by the French botanist Charles Plumier. He named the plant after the German botanist Leonhart Fuchs.

So now, we know the right spelling and why it is called Fuchsia.

For you not to be confused, remember, Fuch.... sia.... (lol! I swear I'm not saying bad words ha...)

But also keep in mind how it is pronounced...  fyoo -shuh ( u here is pronounced as in umbrella, hut, uh-oh)

pag sa wika natin.. fyuuuu-sya.... ayan, I hope I made myself clear.  Still confused? consult your dictionary online.  :P

The Confusing Phrase "Be Used to"

  

Note: To make this blog a little different and unique, I will also explain some things in Tagalog. Pero hindi lahat.  I know there are a lot of articles about English grammar but I am not sure if there are some that are explained in our mother tongue. 


A reminder: The purpose of this post is to inform not to insult.  Bato-bato sa Langit, ang tamaan wag magalit.


Be used  to
    
Many people especially language learners even an English teacher ( I know one) misused this expression. I remember a few years ago, an online English teacher mistakenly used this when in fact, she should have used the  "used to" only,  minus the word "be". 

Now, let's study the definition.


 Be used to (something)*** - this expression is an idiom that means to be accustomed or habituated   to. (Ibig sabihin, sanay ka na sa isang sitwasyon or gawin ang isang bagay.)

 The verb "be" here varies depending on the subject of the sentence and the tense you are using. Let's have some review....  be verbs: present (is, am , are) and past (was, were) 

  Example: 

  I am  used to spicy food.  (Sanay na ko sa mga maanghang na pagkain)
 I am used to eating spicy food. ( Sanay ako kumain ng maanghang na pagkain)


If you are used to eating chili, eto ka!!! puede ka nang sumali ng chili-eating contest at baka mag champion ka pa!!! eto si kuya oh!!!

                                              Ayan, sanay talaga si Kuya kumain ng sili. :P






What if, let's say ...You are not used to eating spicy food? eto maging itsura mo ....

                                                           nyahahaha!!!!




If  you notice, I emphasized the word "something"  after the expression "be used to".  You should be careful placing nouns or words here. There is a rule that this expression should only be followed by a  noun or a  gerund .  

Be used to can also be expressed in other ways:

 1. be accustomed to
 2. be familiar with
 3. be adapted to

Bato-bato sa Langit, Ang Tamaan, Huwag Magalit

Dahil ang title ng article na to eh tagalog, magtatagalog ako.

eh, puede ba taglish na lang? sorry ha. Minsan kasi mahirap tagalugin lahat eh...

What's with the title? Simple lang, marami sa atin nag-i-english na mali ang spelling, grammar , tense , etc...Alam ko maraming tataas ang kilay sa inyo. Marami rin tatamaan at baka magalit pa sa akin. Isa lang naman ang point ko. Kung hindi ka sigurado sa English mo, magtagalog ka na lang. Huwag na maging trying hard.Simple di ba.

Ginawa ko itong blog na to para itama ang mga nakikita kong maling posts na nababasa ko araw araw.Kaya kung sino man ang tamaan, sana huwag magalit sa akin... at least sa susunod alam mo na kung ano ang tama di ba? Ako rin naman nagkakamali, pero open naman ako sa mga corrections. I am sure pati ako maraming matutunan sa blog na ito. Syempre bago naman ako magsulat, i-google ko muna para alam ko na tama yung nasa isip ko diba.

Basta, pag may nakita ko na puedeng i-correct, ayun... alam na. :P

Ngayon baka sabihin ng iba nagyayabang. Iba kasi feeling pag guro ka eh. Kasi pag English teacher ka at nakarinig ka ng hindi maganda sa tenga or nakakita ka na masakit sa mata na mga pangungusap, hindi ka mapakali, gusto mo, i -tama yung nagsabi nun. (Alam ko maiintindihan ako ng mga English teachers dyan).

Minsan naman mapapalampas mo mga typographical errors. Pero minsan alam mo talaga na mali ang spelling.. kasi pag nakita mo naman sa keyboard na malayo talaga yung tamang letra.. eh  talagang mali yun.

So, sana ang blog na ito ay makatulong, hindi makapikon.
